Frequently asked questions
How much is an R&D claim worth?
The tax benefit of any claim is dependent on a number of factors including the tax position of the company during the period of claim, the amount of qualifying expenditure claimed for and the period the claim is made in. Presently, for SME businesses the tax benefit is worth between 18 - 26% of your R&D expenditure.
Can we claim for Patent Box Relief with R&D tax relief?
Patent Box relief is a reduction of a company's corporation tax rate and therefore benefits companies in a taxable profit making position. If the R&D relief additional deduction does not eliminate your tax, Patent Box can be claimed in tandem with R&D tax relief for a highly beneficial tax saving.
How quickly can you provide a claim?
We always aim to work to your timescales, especially if you have a statutory deadline looming. With that being said, we do ensure that claims are given a secondary independent review before completion to ensure that we match speed with quality. Our average claim turnaround time is currently 22 days.
How quickly do HMRC pay out cash credit claims?
HMRC's turnaround time is quoted as 28 days from submission, with a further timespan of several weeks for processing payments. This can vary throughout the year when HMRC are particularly busy.
Is there a risk of HMRC enquiry?
Any claim submitted to HMRC may be subject to a compliance check, both for random processing and with due cause. With that in mind, we adhere to the PCRT (Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation) guidance on R&D claims preparation, and where we feel there is non-qualifying activity or non-qualifying expenditure we will not proceed with a claim and will advise you accordingly. Our due diligence processes ensure that in the event of an enquiry check, we are able to justify and defend the submission.
What information will I need to provide to get started?
During the claim preparation process we'll request a number of financial documents as well as technical information on your project activity. To make things simple, we can request these directly from your accountant or even download them from your accounting software. Our aim is to save your time and make the process as seamless as possible.
